Adoption

Why do welfare organizations motivate people to adopt a pet from a shelter?

Approximately 1 million domestic pets are euthanized by shelters in South Africa each year because there simply are not enough homes for all of them. You can help prevent this tragedy by giving a shelter pet a good home. You will literally save a life by adopting a pet from your local shelter!

Before you consider buying from a breeder or a pet shop, please visit your local shelter first.

The average adoption fee is about R500, which normally includes the sterilisation/castration, first vaccination and de-worming of the dog/cat. If you buy a puppy from a pet shop, the selling price of the puppy can range between R500 and R1 500. Bear in mind that you still have to pay additional costs for the puppy's vaccinations, de-worming and sterilisation/castration when the puppy is 6 months old.

You therefore save a lot of money when adopting a pet from a shelter.

Don't overlook older animals or animals that appear quiet, scared or excited. Many animals in shelters are frightened and a little overwhelmed and may exhibit some minor behavioural problems due to their stressed state. With patience, love, understanding and a good training program, however, even pets with rough pasts become well-behaved family members - if they aren't already!

Some of them might not be the most beautiful dogs/cats like pure bred dogs/cats, but still, they can make wonderful pets. They also deserve a good home and certainly don't deserve to be killed.

Why are you waiting? Your dog/cat are waiting for you at a shelter and want to go home with you! They will be forever thankful to you for saving their lives.

Other benefits of adopting a dog or cat in need of a good home include:

The cost of adopting a pet at an animal shelter is usually inexpensive compared to buying one from a breeder or pet store. Often animals adopted from shelters have already been neutered or there is some economic incentive to have the animal neutered. Most of these animals have also been de-wormed and vaccinated.

Adopting a companion animal from a shelter means you are helping, and not contributing to, the pet over-population problem.

Adopting a mature dog or cat means that you do not have to go through the demanding stage of raising a puppy or kitten.

With a mature pet you have a good idea of the animal's temperament and you know the animal's adult size, hair coat etc.

Mature pets are often house-trained (although some mistakes will likely occur until the animal is used to his/her new family, home and routine) and may even have some basic training.

Providing the animals get along, an adopted pet can be good company for other pets.

Shelter animals have beautiful temperaments and want to please their new guardians.
