Welcome to Pet Action Group

The Pet Action Group is a Non Profit Animal Welfare Organisation which Judy Van Zyl started at the beginning of 2000. Our aim is to try and make a difference in the lives of animals in poverty stricken areas in and around Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa.

We have felt that there is a great need to help the underprivileged by visiting them at their homes and educate them on the proper care and feeding of their pets. It is clear that the lack of knowledge plays the greatest part in improper care, uncontrolled breeding and even animal abuse.

The main problem in these poor areas is that people simply do not have the means, transport or finances to provide their animals with basic health care and veterinary treatment. As a result many animals suffer unnecessary. We provide primary health care services, veterinary treatments and sterilisations at a reduced cost. Pet owners also receive food parcels for their dogs and cats.

On our website you will find more information on the following:

We discuss the influence South Africa's current Recession has on pets and the reasons why so many pets end up at shelters.

We explain why Sterilisation (spay/neuter) is so important. Approximately 1 million dog/cats are euthanised (put down) by shelters in South Africa yearly because of over-population. You can prevent this tragedy by sterilising your pet.

This article explains why we encourage pet Adoption from local shelters. It simply does not make sense to breed or buy while homeless pets die. Also read the story of one of our rescue dogs, Paris, and help us to help her.

You can sponsor a hungry dog/cat by donating pet food for our Feeding Project. Your contribution will make a big difference in the lives of so many animals.

Pet Action helps old-aged people by means of Animal Assisted Theraphy (AAT). Find out what it is and what the benefits are.

Does the current Animal Protection Act fail our animals? We discuss reasons why people abuse animals and the importance of Humane Education. Why should you teach your child to love, respect and have compassion with animals? Learn about the link between animal abuse and crime. Did you know that most criminals started by abusing animals?

You are welcome to subscribe to our Newsletters to receive news about our latest projects.

Founder's Note:

Judy van Zyl had the following dream and was inspired by this dream to start an organisation to help animals in need:

"One day a woman had a dream. She dreamt that she was walking through the streets and all she saw were suffering animals. The pain in their eyes was too much to handle. Dogs with puppies were everywhere, one's condition worse than the next.

Then she saw a new world where people and animals were happy. A place where people became new and where there were no more suffering animals. She smiled when she saw more and more people with the same dream. The vision became clear to her and many others and this is how Pet Action Group was born."

Mufasa The picture shows Judy's beloved dog, Mufasa.

Together he and Judy raised funds for Pet Action and the public loved his 'Pull-a-Cart' trick. This gentle giant was loved by all who met him. Sadly he passed away in 2008.

A special tribute to Mufasa can be read here.
