Mufasa

How Mufasa was rescued by Judy Van Zyl

Mufasa with his cart Mufasa's previous owners were so touched by the pictures of mistreated and abused dogs which Judy Van Zyl displayed at a fundraiser held in Bloemfontein that they asked her to find a good home for their Labrador. They had to move and could not afford to keep the Labrador anymore. They were planning to send him to an 'informal settlement' (squatters camp) that Sunday until they saw the photos of all the ill-treated dogs.

Judy, a devoted animal lover, took the Labrador home intending to find a good home for him. Within two weeks she came to love the big cuddly Labrador so much that she decided to keep him for herself. At that time Judy already had 9 other stray dogs!

Mufasa turned into a beautiful, happy, healthy dog and gave Judy a lot of pleasure. Mufasa also received training at the Bloemfontein Dog Training School and was registered at the Kennel Klub Union of South Africa (KUSA). Judy also taught Mufasa to pull a dog cart to help raise funds for his not-so-lucky and forgotten 4-legged friends in Bloemfontein. Mufasa rewarded Judy for saving his life by helping her to raise funds for other needy animals.

Mufasa, the Labrador with the golden heart and loving character, helped Judy at several fundraisers by doing his 'Pull-a-Cart' trick. Everybody just loved the gentle giant and donations were always lovingly received by him.

Mufasa's last picture In 2003 Mufasa was nominated by the International Fund of Animal Welfare (IFAW) under the category 'Lifetime Dedication Animal Superhero'. Since 2000 up to 2003, Mufasa had collected in excess of R40 000 that went towards the sterilisation of dogs/cats and veterinary cost.

In October 2003, Mufasa was announced as the winner in the above category. Judy received the reward on his behalf from IFAW.

Sadly, Mufasa passed away in October 2008. We are all still grieving his death. He truly was one in a million and no other dog can ever take his place. Judy described him as an "angel" who came to this earth.

Mufasa, our angel, you will always be in our memories and one day we will see you again.
